چکیده

We calculate the force that pins vortices in the neutron superfluid to nuclei in the inner crust of rotating neutron stars, relying on a detailed microscopic description of both the vortex radial profile and the inner crust nuclear structure. The contribution to the pinning energy from pair condensation is estimated in the local density approximation with realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions. The kinetic contribution, not consistently included in previous approaches, is evaluated in the same approximation and found to be relevant. The vortexnucleus interaction turns out to be attractive for stellar densities greater than ∼ 10 g/cm. In this region, we find values for the pinning force which are almost one order of magnitude lower than the ones obtained so far. This has direct consequences on the critical velocity differences for vortex depinning. PACS number(s): 26.60.+c Typeset using REVTEX

Strength of the vortex-pinning interaction from real-time dynamics.

We present an efficient and general method to compute vortex-pinning interactions--which arise in neutron stars, superconductors, and trapped cold atoms--at arbitrary separations using real-time dynamics. This method overcomes uncertainties associated with matter redistribution by the vortex position and the related choice of ensemble that plague the typical approach of comparing energy differe...

Vortex Unpinning in Precessing Neutron Stars

The neutron vortices thought to exist in the inner crust of a neutron star interact with nuclei and are expected to pin to the nuclear lattice. Evidence for long-period precession in pulsars, however, requires that pinning be negligible. We estimate the strength of vortex pinning and show that hydrodynamic forces present in a precessing star are likely sufficient to unpin all of the vortices of...

Microscopic structure of a vortex line in superfluid neutron star matter

The interior of a neutron star constitutes the only known physical system close to infinite nuclear and neutron matter. Most efforts to describe this system have mainly focussed on the role of nucleonic interactions at zero and finite temperature, while less attention has been paid to a microscopic description of excited states of the system, including superfluid vortex lines induced by the rot...

Pinning and Binding Energies for Vortices in Neutron Stars: Comments on Recent Results

We investigate when the energy that pins a superfluid vortex to the lattice of nuclei in the inner crust of neutron stars can be approximated by the energy that binds the vortex to a single nucleus. Indeed, although the pinning energy is the quantity relevant to the theory of pulsar glitches, so far full quantum calculations have been possible only for the binding energy. Physically, the presen...

Frictional Heating and Neutron Star Thermal Evolution

Differential rotation between the neutron star crust and a more rapidly rotating interior superfluid leads to frictional heating that affects the star’s long-term thermal evolution and resulting surface emission. The frictional heating rate is determined by the mobility of the vortex lines that thread the rotating superfluid and pin to the inner crust lattice. If vortex pinning is relatively st...
